The Alpaca Wool

MUNAY

Alpaca wool is a light, delicate yet resistant fibre with unique thermal properties due to the microscopic pockets of air inside. These pockets allow the skin to breath through the fibres on warm days, while retaining the heat in cooler temperatures. Alpaca belongs to the textile group of “noble fibres” – a class exclusively saved for fabrics such as mohair, cashmere and angora. They are also known for their high elasticity.

The Alpaca wool colour can vary up to 22 different tones. The shades have a very rich range from white to black, passing through intermediate shades of brown, grey and natural colors. This feature cannot be found in other noble fibres used for the manufacture of textiles.

• Alpaca Fleece: Obtained from the usual sheared alpaca and is between 25.5 and 26.5 microns in diameter.

• Baby Alpaca: Baby Alpaca is obtained from the first shearing of the animal’s life and has a more premium quality due to its softness. The term “baby” does not refer to the age of the animal because the Alpacas need to be at least 3 years old before they are ready for their first shearing. The Baby Alpaca measured 22.5 microns in diameter.

• Royal Alpaca or Baby Alpaca Premium: Baby Alpaca Premium is the highest quality because it is a selection of the finest Baby Alpaca fibres, which are normally located on the back and closer to the skin. Hair diameter is about 19.5 microns.
